6 Benefits You Can Only Get from the Chairs
Written by Debbie Young.
Of all the apparatus in the Pilates method, the chairs can be the most effective and/or intimidating. People tend to love them, or have an aversion to them. But however you feel about them, they can do the job quite handily! What can take weeks to find in a mat exercise, a person can feel it immediately on the High Chair or the Wunda. With its unique dimensions and varied spring strengths, finding the proper placement of a body can leave little margin for error.
Below are 6 benefits unique to the Chair apparatuses. Using every piece of equipment available to us in the Pilates method can help keep your workouts varied and progressively more difficult.
1. CUT TO THE CHASE:
If you/your client can not focus very easily, the Wunda Chair demands your absolute attention. The compact surface and the strong but short spring of great force can easily toss you around if you are not in control.
2. ACCESS YOUR BACK MUSCLES:
Clients who can’t find their back muscles very easily are superbly informed on the Arm Chair. The support of the chair on the back gives you a chance to feel what muscles should be working when raising your arms.
3. PERFECT FOR THE PREGNANT CLIENT:
The Wunda Chair offers many upright exercises for the pregnant client who is no longer able to lie down for long periods of time.
4. KNEE PROBLEMS BE GONE?
Anyone with knee problems can benefit greatly from the unique alignment opportunities that many of the chair exercises demand.
If your clients love having variety in their workouts, or love having their behinds kicked hard each session, they will love the High chair’s very challenging weighted springs.
The Wunda and High Chairs offer many opportunities for clients to work on their balance – an extremely important component of overall fitness – especially as we age!
In my workshop next month, we will work on helping you gain the comfort and confidence you need on all three chairs; the Wunda, the High Chair and the Arm Chair, and explore how the difficulties you may have on the Reformer or Mat exercises, can often be remedied with the help of the chairs. You will practice the exercises yourself, as well as spotting techniques when teaching others. Come and get truly at home with all the chairs in your studio!
