Vintage Pilates

We are happy to share this entertaining and heartfelt Q & A we recently did with Wade Edwell. Wade hails from Australia, where he runs a Pilates Studio (Proper Pilates). We have been privileged to be part of Wade’s Pilates journey since 2016, when he came to our studio for a week of independent study. As you’ll read in his writing, he is witty and fun — and clearly brings passion and discipline to his practice. Thanks, Wade, for this interview! We especially like what you say about learning how to work from the inside out. How did… Read More

This month, Deborah Stone was gracious enough to answer our “Client Feature” questionnaire. Deborah is a fixture at the studio, coming in several times a week for VP classes. We have become so used to her sunny and disciplined presence, that it was a surprise to remember that she has been a client for just over 1 year! We have loved to watch Deborah’s evolution. She embodies one of the philosophies that Jay Grimes espouses: simply show up consistently, put in the work, and without overthinking things, or being dramatic, profound transformations will occur. How did you discover pilates? I… Read More

We are thrilled that our longtime client Joanne agreed to answer a few questions about Pilates! By day, she is a high powered attorney. By night (she mostly comes to evening classes), she’s a Pilates powerhouse. Joanne says Pilates is essential to her wellbeing, helping her be aligned, comfortable, and joyful. 1) How did you discover Pilates? I discovered Pilates at about the same time that I started cycling for my first AIDS Ride in 1997. I was lifting weights, too, at the time (and still do), and I needed to be more in alignment. At this point 20 years… Read More

Kathy is one of our most treasured clients. She is a dedicated practitioner who has, in turn, inspired just about every member of her immediate family (and her son in law!) to become Vintage clients. A mother, a grandmother, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, lawyer — she is a true renaissance woman and we love the warmth and discipline she brings to the studio. We were delighted to hear how Pilates enriches her life. How did you discover Pilates? I heard about Pilates while traveling in 2000 and booked three classes when I returned to LA. Each class was completely different! Then,… Read More

Tom Oksner has been a steadfast practitioner of Pilates — and a dedicated client of Jay Grimes — for many years. Spending his days in a high-stress career, he found relief and energy through his weekly workouts. Over the years, we’ve been inspired by the consistency, curiosity and joy Tom brought to his practice. So, we’re happy to share his words with all of you! HOW DID YOU DISCOVER PILATES? I’m a slow learner, so I’ve had to discover Pilates more than once. I first found Pilates in New York on a college break after I saw an article in… Read More

We are so lucky to have Janet Kooba as a longtime client here at Vintage Pilates. We get the impression that in her daily life she is elegant, lady-like and humble — but in her Pilates practice, she is determined, focus and tough as nails. A regular client since 2011, Janet has progressed by leaps and bounds to become a powerful practitioner. And recently, she began training at Vital Balance to become a certified Pilates instructor. Find out what inspired her to start Pilates, and what keeps her coming back! How did you discover Pilates? I had read articles about… Read More

Kevin Komatsu started at Vintage Pilates the month we opened our doors. A dentist by trade, he is a dedicated practitioner who comes twice a week to workout, and take advantage of our bodywork offerings. Some of the things Sandy most enjoys about teaching Kevin are his discipline, his athleticism and his inquiring mind. Despite his heavy work schedule, Kevin never misses a lesson or a bodywork session unless he goes out of town. He is a good athlete and plays golf regularly, so he is very aware of his body mechanics and movement in general. Kevin is up to… Read More
