Karen & Sandy: “Two-Way Stretch”
In Pilates Style Magazine, Karen Frischmann and Sandy Shimoda give a crash course on the “two-way stretch.” Here’s an excerpt:
What would you give for the chance to learn the method straight from Joseph Pilates? Karen Frischmann and Sandy Shimoda have the next best thing at their L.A.-based studio, Vintage Pilates, where first-generation master teacher Jay Grimes, who studied under Joe himself, oversees the Pilates and continuing-education programs.
When we asked them what “Jay-ism” they wanted to share with our readers, it was a no-brainer. “The ‘two-way stretch’ is a term coined by Jay Grimes to describe the oppositional reach of both the upper and lower body away from the strong center,” say Karen and Sandy. “It creates length, connects you more deeply to your center and brings more strength, flexibility, symmetry and coordination to your work.”
