“The Work” Graduate Feature: Kara Wily

Kara Wily was in our inaugural year of “The Work”, back in 2012. A Pilates instructor since 1993, Kara’s also had a robust career as a dancer (she studied at Alvin Ailey, and performed in Cabaret). These days, on top of teaching private and semi-private lessons and offering a Teacher Training program, Kara is an avid rock climber. We were delighted to ask Kara our 5 Questions for “The Work” Graduates, and couldn’t wait to find out what she’d ask Joe and Clara!

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO COMMIT TO A PILATES PRACTICE?
Yes, I was laying down doing a leg circle with a four month post-op ACL reconstruction on my left knee. I looked up and saw my leg that was struggling to straighten and said to myself, “This is going to get me dancing again.”

YOU ARE A GRADUATE OF “THE WORK”. HOW HAS THIS PROGRAM AFFECTED THE WAY YOU TEACH AND PRACTICE?
It made me both appreciate all the teachers that I have had who gave their knowledge, and made me want to be more generous with whom I am fortunate to work.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EXERCISE AND WHY?
Right now, it is anything with a Bridge in it, because it is a personal challenge and it makes me feel alive. I am also working on my shoulder flexibility for rock climbing.

IF YOU WEREN’T A PILATES INSTRUCTOR, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
A modern Dirtbagger [an outdoor rock climber!]

IF YOU COULD ASK OR TELL JOE AND/OR CLARA PILATES ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Can we do each exercise in silence and just correct me with your pushes and pulls?
