Sandy discusses Pilates as a Destination

Jan 22, 2026

Jay would remind us that we "...can't teach Pilates. We can only guide people to discover it in themselves."

Sage advice for teachers. But what about for the student?

When a student steps into the studio for the first time they have a reason. It may be that their doctor believes Pilates can improve their health or that they are curious about why their friends love the way it makes them feel. This reason ignites the hunt for better living. Like all good treasure hunts, the search will involve excitement, disappointment, attention, problem solving, rethinking, and so on. And yes, it will involve work and time too. But students should also know that each crumb along the trail will bring reward.

Pilates is body awareness and maintenance at its best and you can trust the map Joe laid out for us - it has been tested and proven for more than a century. If it seems cryptic at first, you will be relieved to have the guidance of your teacher to help sort through clues and messages. Though your destination is embodied Pilates, each treasure gathered along the way is yours to keep.

Enjoy the discovery of finding Pilates in yourself.

P.S. If you read my post "Au Naturel", the exercises I chose after that workout were Tower, Chest Expansion, and the Sandbag.
